I wanted to fill the big picture window in our living room with something, and we had hung a smaller antique stained glass window there in the past. Instead of trying to find or buy a piece that would fill the window, I decided to try my hand at creating one myself.
I messed around with various ideas over the course of 2-3 years. Originally, I was going to try and copy the style of Frank Lloyd Wright (see pic below), but that would have required carpentry skills beyond my ability. The end design was inspired by Piet Mondrian, with bold primary colors and strong geometric lines. I saw a piece by him in the St. Louis Art Museum (see pic below), and then found a knock-off print online that would align to my idea. I generated a computer mockup to play around with color combinations, then finally tested it out using masking tape on the window itself.
Once I was satisfied with the design, I built/stained the wooden frame in pieces, and then ordered stained glass rectangles from a local stained glass dealer. Luckily, all of the pieces came together perfectly, and my window was installed on the inside frame of the existing picture window.
