Custom St. Louis Skyline Mural

Writer: Jeff ScallyJeff Scally

The concrete basement wall was blank for over 8 years. It was always in my peripheral vision as I watched TV from the couch, and I struggled to think of a way to decorate it. Hanging pictures wouldn't work well (because of concrete), so I decided to paint a mural. I decided to St. Louis skyline would be the subject of the mural. I found a photo online that would be used as the basis, then used Photoshop to convert it to a simplified silhouette of 3 colors (Black, Dark Gray, Light Gray).

I printed my photoshopped image onto transparencies, then used an overhead projector to trace the design onto the wall. Then I painted the dark gray sections first, followed by the black, then light gray for the arch/dome. The end product still leaves space on the upper right quadrant for a complimentary followup piece in the future.
